This is the large Barr slick, and large is the honest word: an 8-in sole of hand-forged high-carbon steel from Barr Quarton's Idaho forge, heavy enough that some timber framers will find it more tool than they need. For those who want it, nothing pares a wide surface with more authority.

That long sole registers dead flat across broad tenons and beam faces while the mass carries the edge through the cut. It may even be worthy of display above the mantel, but it would rather be working. Pushed, never struck.
