Barr Quarton made his name forging custom knives before turning to timber framing tools, and his slick does justice to the craft. Hand-forged in McCall, Idaho from high-carbon steel, this is a heavy, well-made tool that cuts extremely well, with a 5-in sole that registers flat on the work and carries real mass behind the edge.

That weight is the point of a slick: let the tool do the work on long paring cuts across tenons, joints, and beam faces. Barr makes a larger 8-in version, but this one is already a substantial tool. Like all slicks, it is pushed, never struck.
