Hori hori translates roughly as small digging tool, and it is the Swiss Army knife of the Japanese garden. One carbon steel blade digs, pries, cuts roots, saws sod, divides perennials, and plants bulbs, replacing the pile of single-purpose tools by the shed door.

Carbon steel takes and holds a working edge and the concave blade moves soil efficiently. Choose the serrated blade, with one toothed edge for roots and twine, or the straight blade with two plain cutting edges. The riveted beech handle fits the hand, and the scabbard with belt loop keeps the blade on your hip instead of lost in the bed. Once you garden with one, you stop gardening without it.
