Urethane delivers the mass of a traditional mallet while absorbing the shock that beats up your wrist and elbow over a long day of chopping, it will not split a chisel handle, and it does not crack in freezing weather, which matters in a Maine shop in January.

Four weights cover everything from carving to timber framing. The 12 oz is for delicate, precision work. The 18 oz is the general woodworking size. The 20 oz suits cabinet work and lighter timber framing. The 30 oz carries a lead plug for extra heft, and it is the mallet we recommend to nearly everyone driving framing chisels; it is the one at work in our shop and classes week in and week out.
