Start small, learn the fundamentals. The Timber Framing Weekender Kit is the bare minimum needed to cut traditional timber frame joinery, assembled by people who have taught this craft since 1974. It is built for exactly what the name says: a weekend project that gets your hands on real layout and joinery without a major tool investment.
Every tool in the kit is one we use ourselves. The MHG carpenter chisel and the Wood Is Good mallet cut the mortise, the Wood Owl auger bores it, the Z-Saw kataba cuts the tenon, and two squares, a tape, a knife, and pencils handle the layout. There is nothing here to outgrow. It pairs with our smaller Shelter Courses projects like the sawhorse and the mailbox post; if you are headed into the full Purely Post & Beam online course, step up to the Starter Kit or above.
