Timber Framing Slicks

Slicks are the heavy-duty workhorses of timber framing. These large, wide chisels are designed to pare away wood quickly when cleaning up mortises and refining large joinery. Unlike standard chisels, slicks are pushed by hand rather than struck with a mallet, giving you precise control over heavy cuts.

A quality slick features a wide blade, typically 2-4in, and enough weight to let momentum do the work. The long handle provides leverage for removing material efficiently. When you're working with timbers that weigh hundreds of pounds, a slick helps you achieve the clean, flat surfaces that make joints fit perfectly.
