The MHG Firmer Bench Chisel brings the German manufacturing behind MHG's timber framing chisels down to bench scale. Made in Thuringen, each blade is fine-ground and sharpened but deliberately not polished, which keeps the back as flat as possible for accurate paring. Chisel length scales with width so every size balances the same in the hand: a 6 mm runs 245 mm overall and a 26 mm runs 275 mm.

The handles are clear-finished hornbeam with slightly flattened sides, so they stop rolling off the bench, a small detail you will appreciate the first time one does not hit the floor edge-first. It is a true firmer pattern: enough blade mass for controlled paring, tough enough for mallet work. If your framing chisels live in the timber pile, these are the ones for the joinery, furniture, and finish work that comes after the frame goes up. We stock 24 widths from 2 mm to 60 mm, plus a boxed set of six.
