Shinwa makes measuring tools in Tsubame and Sanjo in Niigata prefecture, a region of Japan devoted to metalworking since the 16th century, and they have grown into the top-selling metallic ruler maker in the country. This framing square shows why. It is made of stainless steel, so unlike a standard framing square it never rusts, never needs oiling, and never transfers grime onto your freshly planed timber. We added it to our tool kits because it is simply truer than the common hardware store squares, and a true square is everything in laying out joinery.

The graduations are deeply etched rather than printed, which means they stay readable for the life of the tool instead of wearing away in a season of job site use. Choose the imperial version or the metric version to match how you lay out your work.
