The Robert Sorby Bevelled Framing Chisel is a recommended tool in our one-week timber framing class, where it gets put through more mortises in five days than most chisels see in a year. The blade is forged from premium Sheffield steel that is easy to sharpen and holds its edge through knotty, twisting wood. The beveled sidewalls are the working difference: they let you undercut and clean out tight mortise corners where a square-sided chisel binds, and the size gets you down into mortises less than 2 in wide.

The rugged ash handle is built for repeated mallet blows, and like every Sorby edge tool it comes out of a Sheffield factory that has been forging chisels since 1810, back when Sheffield steel set the standard for the world. Choose 1 in, 1-1/2 in, or 2 in, or the set of all three. The 1-1/2-in is the size that goes in our tool kits.
