These professional-grade chisels are made by Fujikawa and feature a thin layer of white steel laminated to a softer steel main body. This steel is incredibly hard. The beauty of the hard steel is that it can be honed to a very fine cutting edge and it will stay sharp. However the blade will chip if the tool is used roughly or is used as a lever in the slightest bit. While we love to use these chisels, we do not recommend this tool for beginners or for anyone with a heavy hand.

Historically, Japanese chisels (OIRE NOMI) were supplied to craftsmen neither sharpened nor fixed tight in their ferrule. It has always fallen to the user to convert it into a usable tool and thus make it his or her own. However, today manufacturers have come round to supplying chisels ready sharpened to a fine keenness with a resulting gain in time for the purchaser eager to use them. You may still need to make adjustments to the handle to best suit your use.

Handles are Japanese Red Oak topped with a black steel hoop.
