Every woodpile has its monsters: the thick, knotty chunks that laugh at an axe. The Gransfors Splitting Maul is for them. Forged and ground to a concave, fairly thin bit, it enters the wood quickly, then its 5-1/2-lb head and broad section push the fibers apart with the momentum only a maul carries. It is the heaviest axe Gransfors makes.

The sturdy poll has beveled corners and is the one Gransfors head built for striking a wedge, so it finishes what the splitting axe cannot. A steel collar guard protects the 31-1/2-in hickory handle from the overstrikes that heavy splitting inevitably deals out. Hand-forged by a smith in Gransfors' small Swedish factory, it is the closer of the firewood lineup.
