Registered chisels are the firmer pattern with a course of strength training: 9 mm thick at the shoulder, tapering to the cutting edge, with the inherent backbone to chop hard and lever out waste wood without complaint. Sorby fits them with an ash handle, a leather shock washer, and steel hoops at both ends so the handle survives years of mallet work.
Around 13-1/2 in overall with a 6-in blade in the middle widths, it sits between a bench chisel and a framing chisel, and it comes in eight widths from 1/4 to 2 in, right for smaller framing tasks and the rough bench work you would rather not ask of your fine chisels. Forged in Sheffield, where Sorby has worked steel since 1810, and hardness-tested before it leaves the factory.
