The registered pattern is the heavy artillery of the framing chisel world: a long, thick, square-edged blade with the strength to chop deep mortises and lever out waste without flexing. Robert Sorby has been forging these in Sheffield, England since 1810, when Sheffield steel set the standard for the world.

The blade runs 10-1/4 to 11 in and tapers from 3/16 in thick at the edge to 7/16 in at the shoulder, so the mass sits where the prying happens. Square sides hold a straight line down a deep mortise wall and are easy to keep square in a sharpening jig. The 9-in ash handle gives you room for two-handed paring cuts. Most of our kits carry the bevelled framing chisel, but plenty of framers prefer the square edge, and this is the one for them.
